WOODSTOCK — A fire Tuesday morning destroyed a family-owned sawmill at 285 Route 232.
The likely cause was a wood stove, Woodstock Fire Chief Kyle Hopps said.
The mill specialized in making wooden handles.
The fire was reported about 9:30 a.m., and Route 232 from Rumford Avenue to Gore Road was closed to allow firefighters to battle the blaze and run water from a pond across from the sawmill. Two adjacent buildings also caught fire, but were quickly extinguished, Hopps said. The family home was not damaged.
The blaze was extinguished about noon.
Fire departments from Greenwood, Bethel, West Paris, Paris and Rumford assisted Woodstock.
