AUBURN — An impressive list of area entertainers will appear at the Court Street Baptist Church’s “In Concert — Take Five” on Sunday, May 1.
This fifth annual edition of the musical program features numerous soloists and duos, and organizer Robert Hansen said there is always an element of unpredictability about the performances.
“With these creative people, you never know what will happen,” Hansen said. He recalled a previous show that was in progress when a performer whispered in his ear that he and another singer would throw a new number into the second half.
“All I could do was sit back and see how it would go,” he said, adding that unexpected events are always a delight.
This year’s “In Concert” lineup includes many styles of music by singers, as well as by soloists and accompanists on guitar, piano, pipe organ, banjo and harmonica.
Performing will be Mitchell Clyde Thomas, vocals and keyboard; singer Kathy Haley, accompanied by pianist Phil House; vocalist Larry Gowell; and pianist John Neal. Rick Messana’s vocals will be accompanied by his wife, Valerie, on piano.
Hansen said there is a possibility that Messana and Thomas will perform a duet they did in Community Little Theatre’s production of “Children of Eden” in October of 2010.
Others on the program are vocalists Landon and Lee Hixon, Marc and Cathy Laplante, Ryan Bryant, and Dianne Hirsh, as well as George Wardwell, harmonica, and Mike Conant, guitar and banjo.
The show also includes a well-known duo from the Portland area, singer Tina Allen and her husband, pianist “Flash” Allen.
In addition, Dave Clark, pastor of the Court Street Baptist Church, will sing and his wife, Wandah, will provide guitar accompaniment. Ron Drummond will play selections on the church’s historic pipe organ.
When doors open at 5:30 p.m., Dan Burgess will play improvisational piano music. The show will begin at 6 p.m.
Hansen is co-producer of the show with Gayle Jonson of St. Phillip’s Catholic Church, Auburn. There is no charge for admission but a free-will offering will be accepted for the Baptist church’s youth ministries and food pantry.
Hansen said the youth group will travel to Pennsylvania this summer for a mission project.
