OXFORD — A flock of paper cranes was folded in the Oxford Hills to help Japanese children whose lives were altered by the earthquake and tsunami.
Local origami experts and new recruits folded a total of 372 paper cranes in one week to meet a challenge set by children’s clothing manufacturer, OshKosh B’gosh. The company planned to donate an article of children’s clothing for every crane folded and sent to OshKosh prior to April 25. The cranes and clothing were to be given to Japanese children.
Karen Ellis and Nancy Holmann worked with the congregation of the West Auburn Congregational Church to complete 252 cranes. Lee Dassler and Emily Libby assisted attendees of the Fare Share Market’s Magpie fundraiser to fold an additional 100 cranes. Groups of obliging homeschoolers added even more birds. The entire flock of 372 was driven down to the OshKosh B’gosh outlet in Freeport.
