The Auburn Art Club will meet Monday afternoon at 2:30 with Mrs. Elliott Bates, Winter St.. Auburn, when Mrs. Robert Pitman will speak on the topic “Art from the Armchair,” Assisting hostess will be Miss Helen Percival.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The Mead Corp. offered $5,000 Wednesday to help start a program to make Rumford, Mexico, Peru and Dixfield “healthy communities.” Ron Guay, co-leader of the employee wellness and restoration team in Rumford, announced the grant during a luncheon meeting of area residents. About 40 of them gathered in the basement of the Congregational Church to hear Pat Jones of the Maine Bureau of Health and other speakers talk about the bureau’s “Healthy Communities” program. “Health is more than just visiting the doctor,” Jones said. “It’s improving a community’s financial, educational, and recreational needs, and housing conditions.” The Northern Oxford County Coalition hosted the meeting, The next one is set for Wednesday, March 19.
