Walter F. Keller D.O

PORTLAND – Walter F. Keller D.O. of Falmouth, born July 17, 1950, passed away surrounded by family on March 24, 2022 after a long battle with Muscular Dystrophy.

He was raised in Philadelphia, Pa. While a medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine he came to Maine for a weekend and fell in love with the state. He went on to work as a Vascular, Thoracic and General Surgeon at the Osteopathic Hospital, which then became Brighton Medical Center and later on working at Mercy Hospital. When he was no longer able to work as a surgeon due to his Muscular Dystrophy he began working as the Director of The Wound Care Center at Mercy Hospital. He was beloved by many patients and colleagues.

He is survived by his three children, Katarina Keller of Lee, N.H., Ash Keller of Farmington and Alex Keller of Freeport; his older brother Robert Keller and his wife Sylvia of West Grove, Pa.; and his niece Heidi Sweetman and her husband Nate.

Below is a remembrance from each one of his children.

Alex – Lessons from my Father – Trust everybody as another human being; to not treat another as greater or lesser than we are all the same in the end. He loved to cook, watch cheesy 80s action movies, learn to oddest things and talk about his life.

Ash – My Dad was a lot of things, hard working, lovable, and charming. But most importantly he was generous and kind. He always taught us to care about people and make sure they are taken care of. This has forever transformed how I live in this world.

Katarina – Growing up we could never go anywhere without being stopped by who I thought was a stranger but was either a patient, colleague, employee, or friend when being out and about with my dad. We would always roll our eyes as we knew my dad was going to spend at least 10 minutes chatting. As I became older I grew to love these moments as I could always see my dad’s eyes light up as they talked. My dad’s love for his job as a surgeon and doctor was immeasurable, but the only thing greater than that was his love for his kids.

Following his wishes we will not be holding a Memorial service.
