AUBURN — Hampered by walks, the St. Dominic baseball team dropped a close game to Maine Central Institute 11-10 on Saturday.

The Saints (1-2) walked six batters, and five of them ending up scoring.

MCI (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning before St. Dom’s answered with four runs in the third. In the fourth, the Huskies scored another three runs, but, again, the Saints countered with another four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-6 lead.

“MCI jumped out to an early lead, we had a little bit of trouble with control, we walked a few guys early, and MCI really punished us for it with every opportunity they had,” St. Dom’s coach Bob Blackman said. “We got down by three, but in the middle innings, the third and fourth, coming back with four runs in each, we really battled back but we couldn’t hold them off. The walks did us in today.”

MCI scored a run in the top half of the fifth before St. Dom’s scored twice in the bottom-half of the inning to take a 10-7 lead. But the Huskies plated four runs in the sixth to go up 11-10.

Kaythean Martinez finished the game on the mound for MCI and earned the victory.

Blackman said that the young Saints, comprised of one junior, 10 sophomores and five freshmen, have shown a lot of maturity early in the season.

“I said to the team today that last year we would have lost by 10 runs,” Blackman said. “It would have been four and a half innings and a loss, but today we showed our maturity and we battled and didn’t give up. That was a very good sign. Last year’s freshmen, this year you wouldn’t know they were sophomores because they look like juniors and seniors.”

Ridge Dionne had three hits including a double for the Saints.
