Branden Staples loads up his cans cart Monday with bags of returnables at the corner of Jefferson and Walnut Streets in Lewiston. Staples collects cans full time and has several routes of his own devising in Lewiston. “There is a science to it,” Staples said. “when I started I would pick all day and make five dollars.” He says that every other week he walks his routes to clean up around the garbage cans. “People see me coming and give me their collected cans.” Staples uses the time he is collecting to think. “I process everything that happened the day before and try to figure out how to make things better in the world.” Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
