AREA — The Center for Workforce and Professional Development at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) is offering free High-Pressure Boiler Operator Training from May 25 – August 31, 6 – 9 p.m., and free Refrigeration 608 Training from June 7 – July 28, 3 – 6 p.m. Information and links to register for the program are available at https:www.bit.ly/CWPDRegistration. High-Pressure Boiler Operator training offers a practical approach, knowledge, and techniques to power plant operation and is designed to prepare the student for the Maine Licensing Exam, which can be taken at CMCC. The course will give the student 450 hours towards the 900 hours needed to sit for the exam. The remaining 450 hours will be required in the field in order to sit for the exam. The average starting wage for a High-Pressure Boiler Operator is $42,000 in the Lewiston/Auburn region.

Upon completion of the Refrigeration 608 training, students will be able to do a variety of things including identifying the components and explaining the application and operation of the basic refrigeration cycle and heat transfer, test equipment, and demonstrate accepted refrigeration applications. The EPA-approved refrigerant handling exam (EPA 608), is included in this free course. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible for immediate employment. The average median wage for an HVAC Mechanic & Installer is $52,500 / year. Access to a desktop, laptop, or tablet with an internet connection is needed. Desktop computers are available on campus at CMCC.

Both programs are funded by the Maine Jobs and Recovery Program (MJRP). Participants are eligible for one training and must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma, GED, or HiSet, and be a U.S. citizen and/or authorized to work in the U.S. Criminal background check and Covid vaccination records will be required. Additionally, candidates in MJRP-funded programs must be a dislocated, unemployed, or underemployed worker, or someone whose job has been adversely affected by COVID-19. Underemployed can be considered as working part-time but looking for full-time work or working in an occupation below one’s skillset.
