This year’s potential edition of the Lewiston Maineiacs took general manager Roger Shannon, assistant GM Tim Schurman and their scouting staff three years to construct.
It took less than 30 minutes for the rest of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to rip it apart.
“I’m sick to my stomach,” Shannon said after the draft was over. “It’s quite frankly the most sickening thing I’ve ever seen. It’s cruelty on another level to break up this team. In understanding the financials of it, and I respect why it had to be done, but in fairness to the players, why not just find a place for the team to operate for a year, until it goes to Sherbrooke.”
With the first pick in Friday’s dispersal draft of the players on the Maineiacs’ roster, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies selected highly-touted defenseman Dillon Fournier. Baie-Comeau followed quickly by selecting offensive defenseman Sam Carrier, and the draft was off and running.
“The first eight picks or so kind of went like I thought it might,” Shannon said.
Shawinigan, which will host next year’s Memorial Cup tournament, made a move up the draft order to select Michael Chaput at No. 3. Halifax grabbed the chance to take Lewiston’s vacated first-round pick in Saturday’s entry draft, Val d’Or took hometown skater Sam Henley, who will now have a chance to play with his brother, Cedrick, and Chicoutimi grabbed 53-goal-scorer Etienne Brodeur.
Francis Beauvillier will skate next season with Rimouski, while Victoriaville added Sam Finn and Stefan Fournier with back-to-back picks.
Only two players who skated with the Maineiacs last season were not selected in Friday’s proceedings: Defenseman Zachary Shannon and goaltender Andrey Makarov.
Top prospects Antoine Bibeau (Gatineau) and Brayden Wood (Drummondville) also found homes. Captain Cameron Critchlow, who was worried he’d have a hard time finding a home as a 20-year-old, went in the second round to Victoriaville, joining Finn and Stefan Fournier, while Jonathan Parisien was the final player taken, selected by Halifax 14th in the second round.
All of the Maineiacs’ draft picks in Saturday’s draft were also selected.
