AUBURN — Teens interested in road trips may want to check out a new camp introduced this year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Auburn-Lewiston Clubhouse.
Great Futures Road Trip aims to offer area seventh- through ninth-graders a chance to explore their future options while participating in a wide array of local efforts. The camp will focus on what the organization’s staff considers the three big C’s facing area students as they prepare for life after high school: college, career and community service.
The new camp concept was inspired by both the national organization’s new slogan, “Great Futures Start Here,” and MTV’s show “Road Rules.”
Teens participating in the summer day camp will literally spend their summer road tripping around Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The program will travel to colleges and universities in all three states, including two-year, four-year and private, liberal arts schools. From Central Maine Community College to University of Maine to Saint Anselm to Harvard, area young people will have the opportunity to start considering their post-secondary options today and learn what schools are looking for in applicants.
In addition to college tours, students will travel across the region to learn about different career paths. While some career visits have already been determined — such as meeting with a judge and lawyer in Portland — others will be determined by camp participants themselves during a career inventory at the beginning of the program.
Teens will also learn the importance of giving back and paying it forward through several community service projects, including work with D’Youville in Lewiston, cleanup projects at state and local parks and volunteering with organizations like Catholic Charities of Maine.
The program also features field trips to several state beaches, IMAX, Funtown Splashtown and at least two overnight camping trips.
Costs for the summer day camp is $500 per teen and includes all the above-mentioned activities. The program is open to anyone, but space is limited.
To sign up or learn more about the program, contact Nick Tifft, youth resource coordinator, or Joyce Campbell, program director, at the Boys & Girls Club, 782-2446, or visit the clubhouse, located at 43 Second St.
