WILTON — More employees at Sykes Enterprises Inc. call center recently learned that they will be losing their jobs on Tuesday.

This second round of layoffs follows a larger layoff in May and leaves approximately 30 employees at the Wilton business, according to an unidentified employee who is losing a job.

When contacted Tuesday, the worldwide customer service organization based in Tampa, Fla., did not provide the number of layoffs or the number of employees now working at the center at 128 Weld Road.

Andrea Burnett, Sykes’ director of corporate communications, provided a statement about the pending layoff when asked about the future operation of the center in Wilton and the potential for hiring in the future.

“Skyes is very happy with our operations in Wilton, and we continue to look for new opportunities for the site. Skyes is always working to adapt to the needs of our clients, which can sometimes lead to a fluctuation in head count, be it increase or decrease,” she said.

Wilton CareerCenter has stepped in to provide workshops on resume writing, interviewing, the process for filing for unemployment and resources available in the area, Patty Ladd, a manager of the Wilton and Rumford Career Centers, said.

“Sykes is a good company,” Ladd said, while voicing optimism for a better future for the local call center. Many companies go through the peaks and lows of business, she said.

“After speaking with some businesses local and statewide, things do look a little better and the economy is starting to look better,” she said. “It’s not great but it’s looking better.”

In February 2010, Sykes Enterprises merged with ICT Group, a company formerly based in Pennsylvania.

The local telemarketing service, located in the former G.H. Bass corporate offices on the Weld Road, was opened by ICT in early 1999 to provide support for insurance and financial clients.
