BELFAST — The Cinderella Project of Maine, an initiative of Waldo Community Action Partners, plans to hold prom dress giveaways in March and April.
Free prom dresses will be available to all Maine high school students at three sites located across the state. Some sites may operate by appointment only; contact event organizers, or find site-specific details online in advance of event attendance.
The first giveaway event will be hosted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 4, and Thursday, March 11, and 3-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11, by the Aroostook County Action Program at its office on the third floor of 480 Main St. in Presque Isle. No appointments are necessary.
Gardiner Area High School is slated to host its event on Sunday, April 2, at the school at 40 West Hill Road. More details are to come on the Gardiner event.
Waldo CAP’s event, sponsored by First National Bank and First National Bank Wealth Management, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Wentworth Event Center, 139 Searsport Ave. in Belfast. Half-hour appointments need to be booked in advance.
With questions about the three events or to book a Belfast appointment, call Waldo CAP at 207-338-6809.
The project, which began in 2006 as a grassroots effort to provide free prom dresses to high school seniors in Waldo County, has grown in the last two decades to distribute hundreds of dresses each year during prom season to students statewide, according to a news release from Allison Harrell, Community Partnerships coordinator and project organizer with Waldo CAP.
Last year more than 250 new and gently used dresses were given out from the three sites, and students representing 11 of Maine’s 16 counties attended events. This year project organizers hope to increase event attendance.
Day’s Jewelers throughout Maine have partnered with the Cinderella Project to serve as year-round collection sites for dress donations. Dresses can be dropped off at any Maine Day’s Jewelers location during regular business hours.
Those interested in donating can also reach out directly to WCAP at 207-338-6809 or ACAP at 207-764-3721. Waldo CAP is sourcing donations for plus-size prom dresses, jewelry, handbags, and dress shoes before its April event. Donations are tax-deductible.
