CUMBERLAND — MSGA Maine Junior Champioinship: Day two of the 75th annual Maine Junior Amateur Championship is in the books, and though intermittent showers kept the players on their toes, the competition pressed forward.

The 12 and under division was the first on the course, and the lead group got things off to a great start, with Axel Lindsay and Charlie deHaas shaving a combined 32 strokes off their first round scores. At the tail end of the division, the title was not decided until the final hole. Ethan Shepard, the leader after the first day, held on to his lead to beat Eric Dugas by one stroke, edging him out 82 to 83 over the two days. Ryan Collins rounded out the top three with a two-day total of 89. Shepard, the winner of seven tournaments during the summer with the MSGA Junior Tour, is no stranger to the winner’s circle, but none of his successes were bigger than the state title in his age division.

The showers were long gone by the time the 13-14 boys came off the golf course. First-round leader Reese McFarlane came back to the field with a score of 84 for a two day total of 159. He would have needed something special though to keep up with Dalton Wickenden playing in the same group. Wickenden fired a round of even par 72 for a two day total of 148. Closing out the top three was Will Kannegieser with a two day total of 160.

In the boys’ 15-17 age group, the final pairing started the day with the top three positions, and that never changed throughout the round. First round leader Austen Truslow followed up his opening 71 by bettering his score by one stroke, capped off by rolling in a twelve-foot birdie putt on the final hole for 70 that left him alone atop the leaderboard at 141. Close on his heels, and shooting only one of three sub-par rounds for the entire championship was Malcolm Oliver, whose 71 left him at even-par 144 for the tournament. In third was Joe Walp, whose 74 left him with a two day score of 147.

Kelsie Dessent held on to her first round lead in the girls’ 14 and under division, besting her first round by shooting 93, taking home the glass trophy with a score of 190. In the 14-17 age group, first round leader Meghan Flanigan held on to her lead by shooting an 86 for a two day total of 174. In second was Sarah Hansen at 185, followed by Ashley Chubbuck, whose second round 89 jumped her into third place.
