MEXICO — Ellen J. Carey, 68, of Middle Avenue, Mexico, died Sunday, Aug. 7, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bob Whitehouse, with loving family at her side.

She was born in Rumford, March 11, 1943, a daughter of Erwin E. and Alice (McDonald) Gould. Ellen was educated in Mexico schools.

She married Edward L. Carey Sr. on July 24, 1965, and together they celebrated 46 years of marriage.

Ellen enjoyed knitting and crocheting and donated many blankets, mittens, hats, and sweaters to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

She also loved gardening, playing beano, and spending time with family and friends, dancing and listening to music at the Eagles. Ellen was an Elvis Presley fan.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Edward L. “Butch” Carey Sr. of Mexico, who she loved very much; her mother, Alice Gould of Mexico; two children, Edward L. Carey Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Rumford and Erwin K. Carey and wife, Jessica, of Limerick; a special friend, who was like a daughter, Dawn Hamilton of Rumford; three sisters, Patty Dyer and husband, Kenneth, of Florida, Mary Whitehouse and husband, Robert, of Mexico and Julie Melanson and husband, Dick, of Rumford; two brothers, Archie Gould and wife, Susan, of Mexico and Michael Gould and wife, Lynn, of Mexico; and five grandchildren, Amanda Carey, Zakeri Carey, Shelby Carey, Joshua Pettegrow and Karissa Pettegrow.

She was predeceased by her father; and a sister, Linda Bernard.
