LEWISTON — A series of four memoir-writing sessions will be held this fall at Museum L-A. Starting Sept. 19, people who have written nothing or have already begun writing have the opportunity to learn the basics of recording personal and family stories in a Turning Memories Into Memoirs workshop.
“We are hearing wonderful stories through our oral history projects,” notes Rachel Desgrosseilliers, Museum L-A’s executive director. “This workshop will encourage people to pass along their own stories to future generations.”
Both beginners and continuing writers are welcome to join the workshop series at Museum L-A. The group will meet for four two-hour sessions to be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 26, and Oct. 3 and 17.
“The group requires no prior writing experience,” said Denis Ledoux, who will lead the workshop. He is the director of the Soleil Lifestory Network of Lisbon Falls. “You will learn the basic skills you need to start to preserve your stories. Anyone who wants to begin the process is welcome to join us. Even if you have written in other genres, memoir writing has its own requirements.”
“At every workshop, writers will devote two hours to learning new writing techniques and to improving their stories in a group of thoughtful and sensitive people.”
Writers will benefit from the structure to their writing time, be stimulated by supportive and thoughtful peers, learn many new tips and techniques for improving their writing style as the workshop will be full of exercises, and group discussions. Participants will write, or rewrite, approximately one story per week throughout the series.
To make the workshop affordable for as many people as possible, tuition is set on a sliding scale, from $100-$200 based on the discretion of the participant. “The workshop is worth more than the higher suggested tuition,” said Ledoux, who has generously contributed his services to the museum. “All tuition will be used to support the museum. Please be as generous as you can be.”
