100 years ago, 1911

Monday morning will see the opening of Bliss Business College and there will be in attendance the largest class since the founding of the school. The pupils, all of whom are new to the school, have the choice of two general courses and will be under the tutorship of seven instructors. Seventy percent of the students are from out of town.

50 years ago, 1961

Cedric Marston of Turner, a bulldozer operator, ran afoul of the “blue laws” yesterday forenoon while at work on grading operations at the new Edward Little High School grounds.

Auburn police were notified about 10:40 a.m. by Franklin H. Prescott of Western Avenue, a former Auburn Ward Three councilman and again a candidate for that office, that the noise of the bulldozer was disturbing the neighborhood. Police were told by Prescott that because it was Sunday the neighbors felt it should be quiet.

25 years ago, 1986

This year’s Franco-American recognition dinner will be held in Maine in honor of a Lewiston woman whose research and writings have had a significant impact on Franco-Americans nationwide.

Lewiston resident Madeleine Giguere, a professor of sociology at the University of Southern Maine, will be honored at the annual recognition dinner scheduled for Sept. 28 at the Ramada Inn, Lewiston.
