On Thursday, Aug. 24, cyclists from Maine and beyond plan to meet in Bethel to participate in the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s BikeMaine Weekend.
The three-day bike riding and camping event, presented by L.L. Bean, will feature two different on-road routes each day — both short (30-35 miles) and long (50-55 miles) options — as well as catered meals, well-stocked rest stops, and route support that includes maps, signage, SAG vehicles, and mechanical and medical assistance.
Drivers should expect to see cyclists on the roads around Bethel throughout the weekend.
“Bethel is such an incredible town to highlight the beauty of cycling in Maine and we can’t wait to share this experience with our riders,” said Bicycle Coalition of Maine Event Director Colleen Donohoe, according to a news release from the coalition. “We are especially excited about new additions to this year’s ride, including an off-road package in collaboration with Inland Woods & Trails, as well as tours and talks with the Bethel Historical Society and the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum.”
The BCM has a number of activities planned around the ride that are open to the public. The BCM’s education team has partnered with Mahoosuc Kids to host a Bicycle Safety Rodeo for Saturday morning of BikeMaine Weekend (Saturday, Aug. 26). This free event is set for 9-11 a.m. at Crescent Park Elementary, 19 Crescent St.
“A highlight of BikeMaine has always been the interaction with our host communities, and the opportunity to share our work throughout the state,” said Bicycle Coalition of Maine Community Organizer Anne Marisic. “The people of Bethel have already been so welcoming, we can’t wait to share in a fun weekend.”
This will be the last multi-day ride for the Bicycle Coalition of Maine as it shifts away from resource-heavy multi-day rides, to direct more resources into traffic safety education, local and state advocacy, and partnerships. The coalition will still host single day and group rides under the BikeMaine umbrella that celebrate on- and off-road riding, explore the state, and encourage more people to enjoy Maine by pedal.
