AUBURN — Police are searching for a man with a knife wound after a call Wednesday morning reported a 16-year-old female with a gunshot wound, according to a police Facebook post.

Police responded to the Winter and Dennison streets area at 5:11 a.m. Wednesday for a 16-year-old female with a gunshot wound to the leg.

When officers arrived, they discovered the female victim and her 17-year-old sister who was also injured.

An officer applied a tourniquet to the girl’s leg and she was transported to the hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening, the post said. The sister had unknown minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation showed the sisters were walking on Dennison Street with friends when a vehicle approached, stopped and a black male and white female exited the vehicle and began assaulting the 17-year-old sister.

During the assault, a firearm was discharged and the 16-year-old was struck.

After interviewing the sisters and witnesses, police learned the 16-year-old stabbed the male assaulter with her pocket knife in an attempt to help her sister who was being assaulted by the male.

The male suspect was seen fleeing toward Turner Street before police arrived.

It was not immediately clear who the firearm belonged to or whether the female assaulter fled or was detained.
