Employees at a Gardiner shoe factory agreed to take a ten percent wage cut yesterday in order to keep their jobs.
The Kayser Roth plant workers also agreed to give up the pay raise they were scheduled to receive in April.
The workers bowed to management’s demands after they were told earlier this week the factory would close unless the pay was forfeited.
A company spokesman told the workers the wage cuts would permit the company to lower the price of its shoes to try make them more competitive.
Lack of orders has plagued the Kayser Roth plant since last August, a company official said.
