OXFORD — A Junior Girl Scout from Troop 1209, Liliana earned her Bronze Award for creating a flower garden to keep bees away from her local elementary school’s playground. The Girl Scout Bronze Award—the highest honor a Junior can earn—is achieved when Girl Scout Juniors focus on an issue they care about in their community and take action to make a difference.
When Liliana noticed a surplus of bees invading the playground at her local elementary school, she wanted to find a solution that would help the insects thrive while keeping a safe distance from school children.
She found the perfect location, and with her successful installation, urged the bees to venture away from the school and towards the new flowers. Oxford now has a sustainable, visually appealing, and environmentally friendly solution to this former challenge.
The Junior Girl Scout was recognized among other awards at this year’s GSME Annual Celebration on May 3, in Fairfield. Learn more about their Bronze Award project by visiting the GSME website.
