AUBURN – A Sabattus man was recovering at a Lewiston hospital Wednesday after his pickup truck plowed into a tractor-trailer the day before, causing the rig to crash through the side of a house on Route 4.

Gerard Grondin, 85, was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center, where he was being treated for injuries suffered in the wreck, according to a nursing supervisor.

Meanwhile, workers spent part of the day at 2834 Turner Road, adding supports to the demolished corner of the house that was struck. The home is owned by Mary Card, who was out at the time of the crash. It was not clear whether the house will be demolished or repaired.

Police said Grondin was driving south on Route 4 on Tuesday morning and had just passed Lake Shore Drive when his pickup truck drifted into the northbound lanes, striking a tractor-trailer driven by Kenneth Huotari of Temple.

The impact forced Huotari tractor-trailer driver to veer across both northbound lanes and two lanes of southbound traffic before it slammed into the house.

Auburn police are investigating the crash and had no new information Wednesday.
