I am writing to express deep concern over proposed federal budget cuts targeting programs that support children and families. These cuts would have long-lasting, devastating effects on our communities and our nation’s future — all to offset tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

As someone who grew up poor, I know firsthand the importance of programs like Head Start. Three of my five siblings benefited from it, and today, we’re all working, paying taxes and volunteering in our communities. Early support made that possible. When my family faced hardships — like my sister’s illness and the resulting medical costs — these programs helped keep us afloat.

In Maine, nearly 400,000 people — about a third of our population — are in need. We’re already seeing hospital closures and a shortage of birthing centers, particularly in rural areas. Cutting health care for foster youth, reducing child care subsidies and eliminating SNAP benefits (just $5.80 a day) would be catastrophic, especially in a state with the highest rate of childhood food insecurity in New England.

As a retired educator, I can say with certainty: hungry children cannot learn. Weakening support systems like Head Start, Medicaid, SNAP and child care assistance doesn’t build a stronger, healthier or more equitable country — it only increases long-term strain on our systems.

I urge lawmakers to oppose any budget that sacrifices the well-being of children and families for the sake of tax cuts for the wealthy. Our nation’s future depends on the choices we make today.
