LEWISTON — Two women were recovering from injuries suffered last weekend when a Jeep slammed through the front of a hair salon on Lisbon Street.
Jessica White was at her nail station at JD Cuts Family Salon working on Tammy Rhinesmith when a Jeep came crashing through the side of the salon about 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
Lawrence Williams, 70, of Minot, died in the crash. He was one of two drivers involved in the incident.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene at 1270 Lisbon St., they found several people injured and a debris field left when a vehicle drove through the front wall of the building.
“Jessica was struck directly at her station,” according to a GoFundMe campaign set up by co-workers. “When first responders arrived, she was found outside in the driveway, still in her chair, buried under pieces of the salon that had collapsed around her. It is truly a miracle that she is alive.”
White suffered four broken ribs, spine fractures and a partially collapsed lung in the crash that a co-worker described as “terrifying, traumatic and completely unexpected.”
White on Friday was recovering at home. She described the scene that left her injured.
“I remember hearing a loud bang, almost like an explosion, and then almost instantly I was thrown, my body tumbling,” White said, “and I could see debris and building flying around me and then I landed on my left side. I instantly had pain in my ribs and trouble breathing. I was conscious for the whole thing. I thought I had just been thrown and was still in the building.”
It was only when she was at the hospital that White learned she had been knocked clear out of the building.
White spent several days at Central Maine Medical Center. Her co-workers set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical bills and lost wages. They are also hoping that money raised will help White rebuild her workstation and equipment.
“Anyone who knows Jessica knows her kindness, her passion for her work, and the way she makes every person who sits in her chair feel cared for and valued,” co-worker Jennifer Dunnington wrote in the campaign. “She has poured her heart into her clients and her career — and now she needs our support.”
The campaign is seeking $15,000. By Friday afternoon, roughly $2,400 had been raised through 32 donations.
A separate GoFundMe campaign was set up for Rhinesmith who was also seriously injured in the crash.
“What should have been a relaxing visit to the nail salon turned into a nightmare for Tammy Rinesmith,” according to the fundraiser page. “Without warning, a Jeep crashed through the front of the salon, sending debris flying in every direction. Tammy was hit by the impact and suffered 5 broken ribs, a head wound, and an injured ankle. We are so grateful she survived, but she now faces weeks of pain, recovery, and stress.”
That campaign was seeking $10,000 to cover lost wages and medical bills. It expected to take up to six weeks for her to recover from her injuries.
Police said it appeared that the crash was the result of an improper lane change as Williams and Ronald Potvin of Lisbon were headed out Lisbon Street. After the vehicles collided, the Ford F-150 operated by Williams struck a utility pole. Potvin’s Jeep Wrangler veered off the road and struck the salon.
The crash remains under investigation.
