LEWISTON — Another season is underway for the Maine Gladiators Bantam Travel hockey team.

In the opener against Casco Bay at Family Ice in Falmouth, the Gladiators grappled to a 1-1 tie. Casco Bay took the lead in the opening period. Matt Brooks scored on an assist from Ben Steele to tie the game in the second and complete the scoring. Kyle Welsh preserved the tie in net for the Gladiators.

The two teams met in a rematch at Androscoggin Bank Colisee with another tie as the outcome. Casco again got the jump before the Gladiators knotted the game on a Jozef Frechette blast from the point with a feed from Kyle Lussier. Zach Vanderwerf put the Gladiators on top with assists from Brooks and Austin Roy. Casco clawed for the tying goal late in the second period, and as was the case in the initial meeting, there was no scoring in the third. The Gladiators unleashed more shots and applied more pressure than Casco Bay throughout the period but couldn’t muster the game-winner. Welsh was strong between the pipes for the hosts.

One day later, the Gladiators got into the win column with a 2-0 verdict over Lakes Region (N.H.)

Roy redirected a shot from the point by Steele to notch the first goal. Brooks added insurance on an assist from Tyler O’Conner. The Gladiators outshot the Granite State team by a 2-to-1 margin. Ridge Servidio served up the shutout in goal.

Head coach is David Steele, assisted by Andy Guerin, Keith Pomerleau and Ray Teixeira.
