Lewiston School Committee member Janet Beaudoin and Scott Harriman, a city councilor, will vie for the House District 94 seat in a special election in February after being selected in local party caucuses.

The special election scheduled for Feb. 24 will fill the seat vacated by longtime Rep. Kristen Cloutier, D-Lewiston, when she took a job as chief of staff to Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry.

Cloutier, a Democrat, was in the midst of her fourth term and would not have been eligible to run again in 2026. The candidate elected to office will carry out the remainder of Cloutier’s term.

The race could have an impact on party politics in the Maine House of Representatives, where Democrats hold just a one-seat advantage, 74-73, over Republicans, with one Independent and one unenrolled in addition to the vacancy in District 94.

Harriman, who was just elected to a third term on the City Council, was selected by Lewiston Democrats during a caucus last weekend. He received Cloutier’s endorsement last month, and had also recently picked up an endorsement from the Maine People’s Alliance.

In a social media post on Dec. 13, Harriman said he’s “honored by the trust you’ve placed in me, and I promise to keep showing up with honesty, hard work, and a clear moral compass.”

“In Augusta, I will fight for working families and seniors, strong public schools, affordable housing and health care, and for the safety and belonging of everyone in our community,” he said.

Beaudoin, who was recently reelected to the School Committee, previously ran for the District 94 seat in 2022. She has said she’s running because she continues to hear from residents “who feel unheard and unrepresented.”

On Saturday, Beaudoin posted a video with Maine Republican gubernatorial candidate David Jones hoping to rally support and donations with “only a couple months to get this done.”
