I am appalled by President Trump’s characterization of all Somalis as “garbage.”
A few years ago, I served as an election observer in Lewiston. I watched as dozens of Somalis came to the polling place. Many brought their entire family — grandparents, babies and teenagers — to watch them cast their vote. Some took selfies and group pictures to record the moment when they were able to participate in a free and fair election. All seemed excited to be participating in the democratic process.
America has always been the land of immigrants seeking a new life. That is the uniqueness and strength of the United States and I hope we will continue to recognize the contributions of new Americans.
