JANUARY

A weekly trivia night at Modern Barn in Bethel turned into a community gathering after Brent Krizos and his wife, Sarah, moved to town. “It’s about fun, it’s about making people feel belonging and a sense of community,” said Jessica Stasinos, owner of the Modern Barn.

Newry’s  Select Board decided someone should be hired officially to care for the Lower Sunday River School on Sunday River Road because the work is too much for a group of volunteers.

A special committee studying options for the future of Woodstock’s old Grange Hall on Route 26 recommended that the town repair it and make it available for public use. Voters approved keeping the grange at the town meeting in March.

FEBRUARY

After several inches of snow fell in the Bethel area Feb. 17, high winds continued to blow, creating massive drifts and multiple clean ups for Bethel area snow crews that continued for three days.

The Bethel Select Board met with Oxford County officials to discuss their contract for enhanced policing services, which provides four dedicated deputies working 24/7 in the town. Bethel officials sought clarification on whether certain line items in the contract were being fairly charged.

Irene McGrew handed over management of the River View Resort on Mayville Road (Route 2) in Bethel to her sister, Michelle Kraus. McGrew and her husband, Chad, ran the resort for 29 years.

It was a winning winter for Telstar’s alpine and Nordic ski teams who had success on the snow while boys basketball excelled on the court.

The federal grant funding that New Spoke Farm’s owners had been counting on to expand their business was abruptly frozen by the U.S. government, a setback mirrored by similar cuts affecting farms across the country.

MARCH

Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies charged Jesse Bates, of Mexico, with criminal mischief after they say he drove his car into a Sunday River ski lift onto the slopes and into equipment Sunday.

Inside their ice fishing shack on Bryant Pond are Kyle Locklin, from left, Gage White, Tom Locklin and Gabby McLaughlin. Kyle recalled ice fishing from Jan. 1 well into March as a child, catching fish year after year. “I haven’t had a season like that in four or five years,” he said. This year, they made it out on the ice on Feb. 1, and despite warmer temperatures in the forecast, they hoped to stay on the ice until the end of March.

With 17 seniors out of 43 receiving a 3.3 or higher grade point average, Telstar High School Class of 2025, has recorded it’s highest number of Latin Scholars ever.

APRIL

Tonya Lewis, of Bethel, was introduced as the new Woodstock town manager during the town meeting March 31. She had previously worked with outgoing Town Manager Vern Maxfield for two years.

MAY

Bethel’s Congo Craftsmen built and installed three little library boxes at the Woodstock and Hanover libraries, and outside the Lower Sunday River School in Newry.

Greenwood voters unanimously voted down a noise ordinance proposed by Mt. Abram Ski Area. The ordinance arose from one resident’s complaint against a neighbor and their 24-hour-a-day generator.

At a May select board meeting, some business owners were surprised that the town pays their trash tipping fees.
