Nathan Roy of Kents Hill hoists the championship plaque after the Huskies beat Falmouth, 4-2, in a Class A semifinal on March 4, 2025, in Portland.

Kents Hill informed the Maine Principals Association that it’s MPA-sanctioned boys hockey team will forfeit its remaining scheduled games after playing just twice this season.

Kents Hill reached the Class A final last season, causing some controversy by fielding an MPA-sanctioned team instead of a junior varsity squad for its prep team. The Huskies lost the state final to Thornton Academy, 3-2.

Kents Hill beat the Portland co-op 5-4 in its opener this season on Dec. 6, then lost its second game to Thornton Academy, 11-0, on Dec. 13. The Huskies were scheduled to play 18 games, the maximum amount allowed for Maine high school hockey teams.

The Huskies started the season with only 10 kids, and that number dwindled after a few games.

“We knew it was just with low numbers at the start of the season, so we were watching it moderately,” Kents Hill coach Justin Wentworth said. “We played a game against Portland to start the year. We played well. …We lost a couple of kids over break, so that’s another reason why. We knew we were going to lose them. So that was the decision.”

The remainder of Kents Hills games will be recorded as 1-0 losses. Some of their games will be played as scrimmages. The Huskies brought a few of their prep team players to scrimmage the Lewiston co-op Wednesday at The Colisee. The Blue Devils prevailed, 6-5, in overtime.
