Thornton Academy remains the unanimous No. 1 team in the Varsity Maine boys hockey poll. What happened behind the Golden Trojans is fascinating, and almost chaotic.

Cheverus/Yarmouth is still No. 2, despite going 1-2 over the past week. That one victory, however, was over the Cony co-op, which was No. 3 in last week’s poll. Even more interesting: that win was also enough to put Cheverus/Yarmouth at the top the Class A Heal point standings, ahead of Thornton.

Messalonskee was one of the teams to beat Cheverus/Yarmouth last week, and that moved the Eagles back into the rankings — they are tied for third with Edward Little, which moved up from fifth after a quality win over Scarborough.

Messalonskee, which is the top team in the Class B North Heal standings, is 8-2 but undefeated against Class A this winter. That includes wins over Thornton — the Eagles are the only team to beat the Golden Trojans this season — Cheverus/Yarmouth and Scarborough.

The Varsity Maine boys hockey poll is based on games played before Jan. 20, 2026. The top five teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
