An ongoing story in the Varsity Maine boys basketball poll has been the weekly change at the top (until the most recent poll). Turns out, the No. 1 seeds in the regional tournaments were equally fragile, as only three of the 10 top seeds won their regions and advanced to state finals — Class A North champion Camden Hills, D North champ Machias and S South champ Valley.
Only one of the four teams that have been ranked No. 1 in the Varsity Maine poll this winter made it through its regional tournament: Camden Hills, which is ranked No. 1 for the third time this season.
The Windjammers’ opponent in the Class A title game, Portland, beat two of the Varsity Maine No. 1s — South Portland and Sanford — on its way to the A South title. The Bulldogs went from unranked to No. 2 in this week’s poll.
Class B South champion Yarmouth went from unranked to No. 4, one spot behind its state final foe Gardiner, which jumped from eighth to third.
The Varsity Maine boys basketball poll is based on games played before Feb. 24, 2026. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
