LEWISTON — A trial date of June 17 has been set for former Councilor Iman Osman, who was back in court Monday to face the theft charges that prompted him to resign from the council in January.
Osman, 36, was indicted in December on one count of receiving stolen property and one count of theft by unauthorized taking.
The charges, according to court records, stem from the alleged theft of two firearms sometime between Nov. 15, 2023, and Oct. 11, 2024.
The first count alleges that Osman took possession of a firearm knowing that it had been stolen. The theft charge accuses him of stealing a gun outright.
A self-described social worker and executive director of the Lewiston Auburn Youth Network, Osman was elected to the City Council in November. He was sworn in to the position in early January but resigned just days later after the indictment was handed up by an Androscoggin County grand jury.
By then, controversy had already been following Osman after questions were raised about his legal address. When he resigned from the council, Osman said he did so because it was in the best interest of the city.
“For the betterment of our community and in the best interest of our city, I believe it is time for me to step aside,” he said at the time.
Osman was represented in court Monday by attorney Allan E. Lobozzo.
