LEWISTON — A car crash on Winter Street on Thursday morning turned into a short police chase that led to the arrest of a local juvenile who was on probation.
Police were called to 99 Winter St. at about 7:30 a.m. for a report that a car had crashed through two fences before coming to rest in the backyard.
The male driver went through one fence, then tried to break through another section of the fence to get back onto the street but got hung up on the snowbank, a witness said.
He then took off running, but police tackled him after about 50 yards. He was taken to the hospital for a possible broken ankle and lacerations and later taken to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.
Police did not identify the youth, but said he was on probation at the time of the wreck.
He was charged with violating probation, police said, and further charges are likely.
Investigators said there were two juveniles in the car, which had been taken without the owner’s permission.
The matter remained under investigation Thursday.
