VELVET HOLLOW SUGAR WORKS, GREENWOOD

Brian and Suzanne Dunham’s Velvet Hollow Sugar Works, 29 Dunham Road, Greenwood, will be open Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Bring your snowshoes and take a trek through the woods to build an appetite before sitting down for a hearty breakfast or lunch.

In the mornings, they’ll offer a Maine blueberry pancake breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon and a beverage, and à la carte cinnamon-raisin toast (vegan). The full-vegan option is blueberry pancakes with tofu scramble.

Beginning at noon both days, they’ll have barbecue maple turkey chili, cornbread and beverages. The afternoon vegan meal option is chili with cornbread. All foods are gluten-free, prepared in their dedicated gluten-free licensed commercial kitchen.

Sit in one of two heated dining rooms to eat and see a maple sugaring demo. Learn about their Maine Audubon designation as a bird-friendly maple habitat.

Suzanne Dunham will sell her maple syrup and gluten-free baked goods. Maple syrup is for sale, too, all weekend.

THE FARM AT ROWE HILL, GREENWOOD

Just down the hill from the Dunhams is Bob and Marilyn Oickle’s The Farm at Rowe Hill, 231 Rowe Hill Road. They have a small circa 1800 farm on historic property. They will be open Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Oickles use traditional taps and buckets to collect sap.

Visitors will see demonstrations of the maple syrup production from taps to evaporator.

The Oickles will serve vanilla ice cream topped with their own maple syrup. For sale are varied sized containers of syrup.

Look for their chickens who will be scratching around, too.

SWAIN FAMILIY FARM, WEST BETHEL

At Swain Family Farm, 185 West Bethel Road, the sap is running. The Swains get lots of visitors every year on Maine Maple Sunday Weekend. They will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Ed Swain and his partner, Stacy Millet, will offer ice cream drizzled with maple syrup and maple candy.

Syrup is available in several sizes: 100 ml., half pints, pints, quarts, half gallons and gallons.

“Ed will have the evaporator going,” Millet said. “Everyone is invited. “

Low buckets on the property are for children to watch the drip, drip, drip from the trees.

CARVER’S MAPLE FARM, BETHEL

Barry Carver , 420 Grover Hill Road, Bethel, said his farm will be open Sunday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be an informal gathering of families and dogs.

Carver said he has a good inventory of syrup of all sizes. He’ll be selling 3.4 ounces all the way up to gallon jugs.

Copper, his dark red retriever known in Bethel for his remarkable retrieving skills, will be there as will eight or 10 other dogs, along with kids and their parents.

Of last year’s gathering he said, “I’ve never seen so many people on Grover Hill.”
