DEAR SUN SPOTS: There will be a baked bean supper at Sixth Street Congregational Church, 109 Sixth St. in Auburn, on Saturday, March 28, from 4:30-6 p.m.
There will be two kinds of beans, red hot dogs, brown hot dogs, cole slaw, assorted casseroles, assorted desserts and beverage. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12; and free for those 5 years and younger. — Elizabeth, Auburn
ANSWER: Thank you to all the volunteers who are so faithful about making these suppers happen month after month. Your service does not go unnoticed!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: There will be a meeting for anyone interested in restarting a Sabattus Seniors Group on Tuesday, April 14, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. It will be downstairs in the town office community room at 190 Middle Road.
The building is handicap accessible, and there is an elevator available. Please come share your ideas, suggestions for better days of the week, games/contests, etc. We will also begin playing cribbage, or any card games we can think of. Please bring a cribbage board and playing cards to get started.
Any local area senior is welcome to join us. For more information, please email [email protected]. — Nancy, Sabattus
ANSWER: This is what it’s about, folks — building community by gathering, sharing ideas and stories, and helping each other. Join in as much as you can and find your tribe.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was wondering if someone in the Lewiston community wants compost. My friend no longer takes it and I hate throwing it in the trash. — No name, Lewiston
ANSWER: If a reader doesn’t reply about this, check in with Gather to Grow (https://gathertogrowmaine.org/, [email protected] and with Lewiston-Auburn Community Garden (513-3871).
There is also a curbside pickup service, Maine Compost. Co. (https://www.mainecompostco.com/). They can pick up compost at your home once a week or biweekly. If you went that route, you wouldn’t have to transport it anywhere.
Another idea. Would it be doable to compost on site with your own composter? There are so many types and sizes to purchase or you could DIY it.
Readers, if you can offer ideas and information, please write in!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is for Mary who wrote on May 13 inquiring about things to do in the area that are budget-wise and group-centered. There is plenty to do at the Auburn Senior Community Center at 48 Pettengill Park Road, where senior and age-friendly programming is held.
Offerings include yoga, walking in nature, crafts, and trips to concerts, plays and restaurants. Check out the Auburn Senior Community Center calendar, call the Auburn Recreation Department at 333-6611, or go to https://www.auburnmaine.gov/departments/recreation/seniors.php.
ANSWER: Thank you for sharing the info! I know this will be helpful to Mary and other Sun Spotters.
