LEWISTON — Police and first responders were on the scene of a crash Thursday morning involving a train and a pedestrian.

Officers, firefighters and United Ambulance Service responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train between Spring and Cottage streets near the intersection of Whipple and Cottage streets, according to a Facebook post by the Lewiston Police Department.

Responders discovered an adult male beneath a railroad car about 10:42 a.m.

The man, suffering life-threatening injuries, was extricated and transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the post said.

Police are not releasing the identity of the pedestrian at this time.

Police said the train was traveling south toward Auburn at the time.

As of noon, rail cars were blocking traffic on Libby and Strawberry avenues.
