LEWISTON — Jane E. Wood, 97, formerly of 40 Wellman St., Lewiston, died Friday, Nov. 25, at the d’Youville Pavilion.

Born in Blackburn, England, on Sept. 2, 1914, she was the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Cliff Dewhurst. She came to the United States in 1922 onboard the ocean liner SSS Amara, with her mother and three of her brothers. She attended local schools, graduating from Edward Little High School, Class of  ’33. On Oct. 5, 1937, she married Carl F. Wood. They lived in Auburn until 1944, when they moved to Red Bank, South Portland, where Carl worked in the shipyard during World War II. He passed away on July 25, 1992.

She worked for many years in the local shoe and textile industries, including time at the Pepperell Mill and Malvee Stitching. She loved mystery books and movies, played the piano, and would sew many of her children’s clothes. She did quilting and rug making in her later years. For many years, she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital, and also at Martel and Pettengill schools, helping children with reading problems.

A member of the former St. Joseph’s Church, Prince of Peace Parish, she is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Anne Danforth and husband, Michael, of Lewiston; five grandchildren, Debra Berube, Mark and Steven Doyon, Daniel Surette, and Jennifer Cormier; 18 great-grandchildren, Brian and Todd Berube, Ian, Jana, Jayce, Devon, Cody, Derrick, Sarah, Emma, Julia, Isabella and Jada Doyon, Evelyn, Norah, and Kathleen Surette, and Briar Kathleen and Etta Cormier; and four great-great grandchildren.

Besides her loving husband, she was predeceased by two daughters, Nancy Surette and Janet Fortier, six brothers, Percival, Fred, Richard, Albert Jr., William, and Havelock Dewhurst; and a sister, Clarice Ball.

She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and her kindness to others.
