As Sen. Susan Collins wrote in her 2016 Washington Post editorial about then-candidate Donald Trump, “I am also deeply concerned that Mr. Trump’s lack of self-restraint and his barrage of ill-informed comments would make an already perilous world even more so … Mr. Trump’s tendency to lash out when challenged further escalates the possibility of disputes spinning dangerously out of control … the unpleasant reality that I have had to accept is that there will be no ‘new’ Donald Trump, just the same candidate who will slash and burn and trample anything and anyone he perceives as being in his way or an easy scapegoat.”
We can only hope that, if the first Trump administration and the first year of the second Trump administration haven’t caused Sen. Collins moral outrage, the president’s recent comments will. President Trump’s expletive-laden social media posts, explicitly threatening war crimes, offer unambiguous confirmation of what Sen. Collins was thinking back in 2016.
We ask that Sen. Collins demonstrate the courage that other Maine politicians have demonstrated when honorably serving the people of Maine and the country. I would respectfully ask Sen. Collins to introduce a Trump impeachment resolution in the U.S. Senate.
