TURNER — Selectmen agreed Monday night to have Jim Hansen attend their next meeting to discuss the appearance of his car dealership on Route 4.
Members said they have received complaints from residents about it being used as a junkyard.
Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams and selectmen agreed that Hansen’s operation is legal.
Selectman Dennis Richardson said he thought more than 1,000 cars passed through the dealership annually.
Hansen also has a licensed wrecker service operating from the site.
A legitimate part of the wrecker business is holding damaged cars until the insurance company and the owner have decided what to do with them, he said.
Selectman Ralph Caldwell said Hansen does sell used parts, however it was reasonable for him to salvage usable parts from totaled cars before disposing of them.
Selectman Kurt Youland said the problem was the appearance of the place, especially in the winter when the large number of cars on the site were not hidden by foliage.
Hansen will be asked to meet with the selectmen at their next meeting.
Timmy Turner, owner of Timmy Turner’s Pizzeria, received permission to again use outdoor tables in a fenced in area at his restaurant. Williams said that though Turner’s restaurant is small, the quality of his food has made it a success.
Little Guy Press in Turner was again the low bidder for printing the annual town report. Little Guy, who printed the reports last year, bid $2,750.
Rampart Bituminous received the order for 3,500 cubic yards of cold mix at $58.95 per cubic yard.
Town Manager Eva Leavitt reminded selectmen that she has only 103 days left before retirement.
Selectmen spent considerable time reviewing the job description for the new town manager, including whether or not the person had absolute authority to hire and fire non-appointed employees. While they want oversight of employee matters, they said they believe department heads should have this authority.
They tabled the discussion until reviewing state law. Afterward, they will write the job description as an outline of the town manager’s duties and fill in the details with town policies.
Leavitt has ordered a display board with brass plaques memorializing each of the recipients of the towns Boston Post Cane.
