To the students who take classes there, it’s called “The student salon.” But to the surrounding community, it’s called Bernard’s.
Mr. Bernard’s School of Hair Fashion opened in Lewiston in 1960 to educate students in the field of cosmetology.
Students work on mannequins and each other. They also offer a full range of services to the public Tuesday through Saturday.
Costs range from $1.50 for a shampoo to $4 haircuts to spiral perms for $45.
The Lisbon Street school has an enrollment of 100 and seven instructors, said Associate Director Shannon Vishe. She said five of those students are currently men.
Vishe said a high percentage of graduates quickly land jobs. “It’s a field that there are always jobs in,” said Vishe. “It’s a mood lifter. People always want to have their hair done.”
