DIXFIELD — Selectmen signed a 29-article town meeting warrant Monday night that includes a nearly 6 percent municipal budget increase, along with three proposed ordinances.
They also learned of a proposed $128,000 increase, or 7.6 percent, in the town’s share of RSU 10 school taxes to $1,798,458, and a 7.2 percent hike in Oxford County taxes to $114,135.
How much of a hike will be determined once the school budget is acted on by the residents of the 12-member district on May 31 and June 12, as well as by the amount of overlay or surplus money the town will have to apply to the municipal budget.
Residents act on the annual town meeting warrant beginning at 6 p.m. May 24 at Dirigo High School.
A a major reason for the higher budget are sums for several capital reserve funds.
The tax rate will be set this summer, with the first half of property taxes due in September.
The current year’s municipal budget is $1,952,568.
The proposed ordinances include one that extends the all-terrain vehicle access route on several town streets. Another aligns the town’s building code with that of the state, and a third brings various fire department codes also in line with the state’s.
In other matters, Kyes Insurance representative Flint Christie outlined potential insurance requirements for the Outdoor Market Committee, as well as for the town and vendors who sell their wares at the annual event.
The request for insurance information was triggered by new leadership for the event that raises money for various child-centered activities. The committee has always been self-governing but considered itself a part of the town.
Christie will provide additional information that will be used to decide whether or how to insure the event.
Selectmen want to see the event continue because it is the only townwide event and brings many people into town.
Also on Monday the board:
* Authorized Anne Simmons-Edmunds to provide an unspecified sum of money from the animal control account to the River Valley Animal Advocates organization at the end of the fiscal year.
* Appointed Selectmen Norine Clarke and Mac Gill to determine the annual Odd Fellows and Rebekahs scholarship winners. About $2,500 will be distributed to several Canton, Carthage or Dixfield graduates from Dirigo High School.
