100 years ago, 1912
Arrayed in a velvet gown, a stylish picture hat set jauntily on her store curls, and carrying a parasol, Jocko looked quite the lade when she made her first bow to the Music Hall audience in Lewiston Monday afternoon. Jocko is a monkey that can impersonate most any human character, from a little child saying its evening prayers, to Oom Paul (“Uncle“ Paul Kruger, a leader of the South African Republic), smoking his pipe, changing her pose and expression to suit her costume. Also in the performing animal company are Oscar, the big monkey cyclist who is nicknamed Patsy; a pony and a trick dog.
50 years ago, 1962
Officials of the Bliss Business College, long located at 160 Lisbon St., Lewiston, have announced they will move into the building now housing the Knights of Columbus organization at Webster and Pine Streets. The K. of C. building has been purchased by Joseph Blais, who will renovate it and lease it to the school.
25 years ago, 1987
A handful of Main Street merchants told Lewiston city officials Tuesday they favor the reconstruction of the road to three lanes, but they also called for installation of traffic signals that experts say are not warranted. The Lewiston-Auburn Comprehensive Transportation Study recommends that outer Main Street be redesigned similar to Auburn’s Center Street. Two travel lanes would lie on either side of a center turning lane between Montello and Memorial avenues. Some people feel that traffic lights should be installed at King Avenue and at the Marketplace Mall, the sites of traffic congestion.
