AUGUSTA — Two of Maine’s most popular state park beaches are looking for some qualified lifeguards.

Five positions for certified lifeguards remain open at Popham State Park in Phippsburg and Reid State Park in Georgetown, under the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, according to park officials.

“These are great beaches and very active,” said Brian Murray, park manager at Popham and head of the BPL’s Lifeguard and Surf Academies. “It’s a nice, busy job. How else would you want to spend your summer?”

The park lifeguards not only provide an important safety function at the beaches, but they also are important representatives of the parks, Murray said.

“It’s not just about saving lives, it’s also about public relations,” he said.

Five positions need to be filled. The jobs are full time, 40 hours a week, and pay $10.43 an hour. Candidates must be at least 18 and be certified in life saving and have CPR/first aid.

Successful applicants also must attend Lifeguard Academy and Surf Academy on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12 and 13, Murray said.
