MADISON — Alyssa Charity belted a two-run double in the first inning and Dirigo broke open a tight game with three big runs in the top of the fifth inning as the No. 4 Cougars upset top-seeded Madison, 9-3, in the teams’ Western Class C semifinal game Saturday.
Gretchen Bradbury led the Cougars’ offensive attck with three hits, including a double, while Charity and Megan Bradbury also collected a pair of hits. Alussa Wade didn;t walk a batter and scattered seven hits to earn the picthing win.
Madison stayed close with a run in the first and two more in the third, but Dirigo broke the tie with a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the seventh to seal the victory.
The Cougars will square off against No. 7 Sacopee Valley at St. Joseph’s College on Tuesday in the Western Class C title game.
Raiders walk off on Patriots
FRYEBURG — Maddie Pearson scampered home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a wild Fryeburg comeback Saturday as the Raiders squirmed past Gray-New Gloucester 4-3 in the teams’ Western Class B softball semifinal.
Gray-New Gloucester plated one run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Fryeburg started chipping away in the home half. Carla Tripp led off with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a wild throw, and Pearson reached. Maggie McConkey blooped a single to right to plate Tripp and move Pearson to third, and on the next pitch she broke for home.
Sarah Harriman was solid in the circle for the Raiders, fanning 10 batters in the victory.
Catcher Samantha Wilkins led the Patriots’ attack with a double, and Sandra Ricardi had three hits for the visitors in the loss.
Rams tough on Vikings
AUGUSTA — After clawing their way back to within a pair of runs, the Oxford Hills Vikings saw Cony do what it’s done best all season: score in bunches.
Cony rattled off five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for an 8-1 win over Oxford Hills in the teams’ Eastern Class A semifinal Saturday.
Sonja Morse racked up 10 strikeouts for the unbeaten Rams, who will face No. 7 Brewer in the Eastern A final Tuesday. Molly Russell keyed the Cony outburst in the sixth with a two-run home run, and catcher Nicole Rugan and Cecilia Fuller also belted doubles.
Abby Bernier led the way for the Vikings with a double.
