Lewiston liquor dealers received a sudden shock late Wednesday afternoon when they learned that Sheriff Lowe’s squad of four deputies were actually raiding. Two seizures were made and a whole jigger load of stuff was carted across the north bridge to the county buildings. Most of the stuff on the dray of contraband came from the Rockingham Hotel, Middle Street, where the deputies made a thorough job of cleaning out the barroom, which is located in the basement story. Eligible for transportation on the buses are pupils attending grades sub-primary to four, inclusive, who live a mile from their school, and pupils from grades five to nine, inclusive, living one-and-one-quarter miles from school. Discount Martin Inc. got permission from the Planning Board on Thursday to build a new 4,240-square-foot facility on Turner Street, opposite the rear of the Auburn Mall. The new building will be constructed on a wooded lot that’s sandwiched between an open field and a house. Meeting in special session, the board approved the special-exception request from the office supply store, which was necessary because of inadequate street frontage and because the company proposed more than a ten percent building coverage on the lot.
