The limit of $25 for a fine as the statutes designate for breaking the speed laws was administered to C. E. Cross, a salesman for a Boston auto company, who defied the ordinances by using the principal streets of Auburn as a speedway, Monday evening. Auburn has never seen such a demonstration of “quicker’n lightning” auto driving as that which occurred at about 8.30 o’clock when Cross with one passenger went down Court Street in his especially made Buick at the rate of 50 miles an hour. The car, after touching the high places in Auburn, went across North Bridge to Lewiston.  The event came about when Cross was talking shop with several other chauffeurs and telling of the merit of his car. One of the chauffeurs said he didn’t believe that the car would go 45 miles an hour.

Growing a lawn in front of the Salvation Army headquarters, 67 Park St., Lewiston, seems to be impossible. For the second time in two years, the area in front of the building was seeded, and once again, a frenzy of footprints, some of them three and four inches deep, have appeared. “It’s apparently done by some mischievous children,” Mrs. Major Robert Baker said. Last spring, with the help of Bates College students, the two small patches were seeded. A few weeks after seeding, the same thing happened. “We had a netting over it this year, but when we took it down two days ago, that’s when it all happened again,” she said.

The Lewiston Planning board will view conceptual designs Tuesday for a controversial $13.8 million apartment complex to be build on 34 acres along Grove Street. Two weeks ago, developers failed to win a variance to build 25 12-unit buildings. Current zoning regulations limit the number of dwelling units in a single building to eight. The developers now hope to win approval for 38 8-unit buildings.
