BANGOR — A coalition supporting passage of the same-sex marriage proposal on Maine’s November ballot says it has new supporters, including members of the clergy and faith communities.
Mainers United for Marriage, the coalition supporting the initiative, said Wednesday that 350 members of the clergy representing 20 different denominations and 158 Maine towns are supporting the campaign to allow same-sex couples to receive a marriage license in Maine.
Protect Marriage Maine, which opposes the referendum, also claims support of religious groups.
Meanwhile, Maine’s Roman Catholics appear to be divided on the proposal. Catholics for Marriage Equality Maine supports civil marriage rights for same-sex couples. Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Richard Malone apostolic administrator in Portland, so he can continue to lead the church’s fight against the legalization of gay marriage.
