100 years ago, 1912
The second set of ballots to be used at the election this September in Auburn were received in this city on Aug. 19 and on the same day a telephone message was received by George E. Bumpus of Auburn ordering him to ship the boxes back as there was a mistake in the Prohibition ticket as it was printed. The telephone call was long distance. In Lewiston, it was found that the ballots had not been received, but it was apparent that Lewiston officials had heard of a mistake. They seemed to be of the opinion that the Prohibitionists had been tardy in entering some of their candidates’ names.

50 years ago, 1962
Hundreds of squealing, shouting, laughing, happy youngsters poured onto the grounds of the Lewiston Athletic Park this morning signaling the start of the day-long annual play day of the Lewiston Recreation Department. The first event of the day was the selection of Miss Lewiston Playground and 11 pretty and pert candidates were on hand for the competition. One by one they paraded across the stage facing the corps of judges and onlookers. Flashing pretty but shy smiles, the candidates then lined up to await the decision of the judges. After a short conference among judges, Miss Bates Street Playground, Linda Boucher, was led to the center of the platform where she received the crown from Mayor Donia J. Girard.

25 years ago, 1987
Crops in the area are looking good despite this year’s lack of rain, but the next few weeks could be crucial for continued success in the fields, farmers say. The area had 1.79 inches of rainfall in July, considerably less than last year’s 3.44 inches. “The area could stand more rain, but the rain we have had has been good for us,” said Charles Gould, an agent with the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Maine. There has been some damage due to wind from a storm earlier this week. “Some corn fields were blown over, but it really wasn’t anything significant,” said Gould.
