Firefighters in Lewiston and Auburn will mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with two ceremonies.

The Auburn Fire Department and Auburn Firefighters Local 797 union will start the day at 8 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts at the Central Fire Station at 550 Minot Ave.

The official Auburn ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with presentations by new Fire Chief Frank Roma, police Chief Phil Crowell and Mayor Jonathan LaBonte.

The Auburn Fire Department honor guard is scheduled to make a presentation at 8:46 a.m. — the moment of first impact on the World Trade Center in 2001.

Lewiston’s ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9:58 a.m. at the Lewiston Fire Department at 2 College St. It begins with a moment of silence and available Lewiston Fire Department personnel assembling in front of the station flag pole.

They will mark the collapse of the World Trade Center’s south tower at 9:59 a.m. by ringing the station bell 15 times — three sets of five chimes. That’s a firefighter funeral tradition representing the last call.

That will be followed by a full minute of silence and prayers. Fire Department members will place a wreath on the city’s firefighter memorial.

Pictures of the 343 New York firefighters who lost their lives that day will be on display in the Lewiston station.

Back in Auburn, the Auburn department and the American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive at the Central Station from 1 to 6 p.m.
