JAY – A National POW-MIA Day recognition program will be held Friday, Sept. 21, at the Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Remembrance Bridge Monument of All Wars, at Route 4 and Riley Road.

Chairman Palmer Hebert announced the program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

National POW-MIA Recognition Day is designated each year by Presidential Proclamation and is held on the third Friday in September.

“The day is set aside for this nation to remember those members of our Armed Forces who are being held as Prisoners of War or are Missing in Action from any war,” according to a press release submitted by Linda Brackett of the VFW in Jay.

The Frank L. Mitchell Post 3335, Veterans of Foreign Wars, its auxiliaries and the United Bikers of Maine are sponsoring the local program.

“The program is held in hope that our government will keep searching for answers and the return of our POW-MIAs to their loved ones,” the release states.

This will be the 20th consecutive year that a POW-MIA program has been held in this location.

The POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge of All Wars was dedicated on April 25, 1992.

The general public is invited to participate in this ceremony. A light luncheon will be served at the VFW Post, lower level, on Jewell Street, after the program.
