1918 – 2013
AUGUSTA — Arlene “Nini” Pomeroy died at Maine General Medical Center on March 23, peacefully in her sleep, with several family members at her side. She suffered a hip fracture on March 17. Her greatest fear had been that she would be a burden to her family and was able to die the way she wished.
She was born in Auburn on April 14, 1918, the daughter of Walter and Julia Hicks Currier. She attended Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School.
On June 26, 1937, she married her childhood sweetheart, Charles Pomeroy. They met when she was 13 at the youth fellowship at the Universalist Church in Auburn. They began a love affair which lasted until Charlie’s death in 1993. They had four children — Karl, David, Charlene and Pamela.
Her husband pursued law as a career and served as referee in bankruptcy, an associate justice on the Maine Superior Court and later as an associate justice on the Maine Supreme Court. Nini’s career was supporting her husband, raising her family, engaging in many volunteer activities and generally managing and organizing every social and church activity she was involved in.
She was very active in the Universalist Church and served as a director of the Clara Barton and Elliot P. Jocelyn diabetic camps, which were sponsored by the church. At the time of her death, she enjoyed the longest tenure as a member of the Elm Hurst Street Universalist Unitarian Church in Auburn.
She was an avid and highly skilled craftswoman and cook. She and her husband “adopted” every clerk who served on the court. She also organized and catered numerous social events for the court. She never met a stranger — always met a new friend. She truly touched the lives of every person she met.
Nini was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Charles; her sister, Helen; and son, David.
She is survived by her son, Karl (Suzanne) Pomeroy; David’s widow, Marilyn; daughters, Charlene Kinnelly and Pamela Gilliam; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to thank her personal care specialist, Susan; her friend, Judy; and her friends at the Cohen Center bridge and book club groups who have helped to keep her active and involved in the past few years of her life. We would also like to thank Dr. Scott Schiff Slater and his wonderful staff at Hallowell Family Physicians.
